a beautifully crafted piece of work.
— The Scotsman

Click here for Sekoya article in The Scotsman

Sekoya is an interdisciplinary trio combining their Scots intonation of Europe’s version of the international language of Jazz with articulate rhythms and soulful grooves to create a genre-defying musical entanglement uniquely their own. Vibrant Celtic-inspired piano melodies are interwoven with flowing bass lines over a foundation of propulsive drums creating an almost cinematic sound. The amalgam of these three instrumentalists is a singular sonic spirit, with a focus on energy and interplay.

FAQ’s

WHAT DO YOU COVER IN A TYPICAL LESSON?

I teach with 3 areas in mind:

  • Technical Work: Scales, arpeggios, chords, theory, exercises, piano techniques.

  • Transcription and song learning: using your ear to copy the great American Jazz players and learning popular song riffs and music.

  • Reading: the traditional approach of learning from the great European classical composers by reading their music.

I AM A COMPLETE BEGINNER, CAN I COME FOR LESSONS?

  • Yes of course! All levels and ages are welcome.

WHERE DO THE LESSONS TAKE PLACE?

  • I teach from my home near the Shore in Leith. At the moment I am unable to come out for any home visits.

DO YOU TEACH ALL YEAR ROUND?

  • Mostly, I teach from September to June and then I take a break during the summer months of July and August.

DO YOU TEACH ON THE WEEKENDS?

  • No. Only on Mondays to Fridays.

DO I HAVE TO BOOK IN ADVANCE?

  • Yes. There will be an initial lesson booked independently of any commitment, thereafter lessons are booked in blocks containing 4x lessons.

The payment for all 4x lessons is to be made in advance at the start of the block.

WEEKLY VS FLEXI LESSONS

  • Weekly lessons - a dedicated timeslot each week that I block off for the month in my diary for your lessons.

Flexi lessons - let me know when you would like a lesson sporadically or fortnightly and I will let you know what I have available that week.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

  • Any Lesson missed by the Student due without notice of 1 week shall be paid in full. If the Lesson is cancelled for reasons beyond the Student’s control or in reasonable circumstances, the Lesson may be rescheduled for another date or pushed back a week. However, regardless of the circumstances, any Lesson cancelled within 48 hrs will be paid in full unless otherwise agreed with the Teacher. If the Teacher cannot give any scheduled Lesson, the Lesson will be carried forward to another date. No refunds will be given, all payments made are final and can only be redeemed via the appropriate amount of lessons. If the Student is late by more than 15 minutes for a Lesson they will forfeit that Lesson for the full fee, no extra time or rescheduling will incur.

WHERE ARE THE LESSONS HELD?

  • I teach from my studio space at home. I do not currently offer home visits unless in special circumstances.

HOW DO I PAY YOU?

  • A booking confirmation invoice will be sent to your email and you can settle the fee via bank transfer or with cash. You must pay in cash for one-off/sporadic lessons.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?

  • 30 Minutes: £22.50

  • 60 Minutes: £40.00

*Prices for weekly lessons, booked in blocks of four lessons. For example, 4x 1hr lessons is a total of £160.00.

DO I HAVE TO DO THE GRADES? (ABRSM, TRINITY, ROCKSCHOOL)

  • No. When asked I have helped students through ABRSM, Trinity, and Rockschool exams but I tend to utilise the content of the graded books without insisting on examination.

I often use materials from ABRSM graded books and the Henle system to help collate a progression for each student for a personalised lesson plan.
